The New SMS Rules in Australia (What You Need to Know)
From 1 July 2026, new regulations introduced by the Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) require all alphanumeric Sender IDs (for example, your business name) to be officially registered.
Ā
If your Sender ID is not registered, your messages will still be delivered. However, they will appear as āUnverifiedā on the recipientās device. This can reduce trust, open rates, and overall engagement.
Ā
This initiative has been introduced to reduce SMS scams and create a safer messaging environment across Australia.
Do You Need to Register?
You are required to register if you send SMS using a business name as your Sender ID.
You are not required to register if you only send messages using a shared number or a dedicated mobile number.
Why This Matters for Your Business
Messages marked as āUnverifiedā can immediately impact how your brand is perceived. Customers may be less likely to engage, click links, or respond.
Registration ensures your messages appear verified, display correctly, and maintain strong engagement and trust with your audience.
How the Sender ID Registration Works
Cellcast manages the majority of this process on your behalf. There is one key step that requires your action.
Step 1 ā Submit Your Sender ID Details
You provide your Sender ID, business details such as ABN, address and website, and a nominated contact person.
At this stage, Cellcast reviews your submission to ensure it meets ACMA requirements. No action is required from you.
You will receive a confirmation email titled:
āSender ID Registration Receivedā
Step 2 ā Submission to ACMA
Once your details are approved internally, Cellcast submits your Sender ID to ACMA on your behalf.
This triggers the next stage of the process.
You will receive an email titled:
āSender ID Submitted ā Action Requiredā
Step 3 ā ACMA Verification (Important)
ACMA will send a verification email to the email address linked to your ABN or ABR registration.
The email will come from:
no-reply@digital.acma.gov.au
This is the only step that requires your direct action.
To complete this step, you need to open the ACMA email, click the secure link, log in using your Digital ID (myID), and confirm your organisation details along with your authority to approve the Sender ID.
This step is mandatory. Without completing this verification, your Sender ID cannot be registered.
Step 4 ā Final Approval
Once you have completed the verification, ACMA will finalise their review and Cellcast will activate your Sender ID.
You will receive confirmation titled:
āYour Sender ID Has Been Approvedā
Timeframe
The process typically takes up to 24 hours for Cellcast review and submission. ACMA approval generally takes between two and three business days.
If You Donāt See the ACMA Email
The verification email is sent to the email address linked to your ABN registration. If you do not see it, check your spam or junk folder.
If you are unsure which email is linked to your ABN, you may need to confirm this with your accountant or business administrator. The Cellcast team can also assist you in locating or re-triggering the process if required.
Reminder Process
If the verification step is not completed, a reminder will be sent after three days to ensure the process is not missed.
What Happens If You Donāt Register
From July 2026, messages sent using unregistered Sender IDs will be marked as āUnverifiedā. While they will still be delivered, this may reduce customer trust and campaign performance over time.
How Cellcast Supports You
Cellcast handles the eligibility checks, submission to ACMA, compliance requirements, and ongoing management of your Sender ID.
Your only responsibility is to complete the verification step when prompted.
Final Thoughts
Sender ID registration is now a necessary step for any business using branded SMS in Australia. Completing the process ensures your communications remain trusted, compliant, and effective.
Need Help?
If you need assistance at any stage, the Cellcast team is available to guide you through the process and ensure everything is completed correctly.
